Médoc vineyards and châteaux

The word “château” in Bordeaux refers to a wine estate, and many châteaux open their doors free of charge to visitors for tours of their cellars and, of course, tastings.
Château la Tour – Pauillac Château Cos d’Estournel the famous Médoc vineyards cover 15,000 hectares and are divided into 8 appellations: Margaux, Moulis, Listrac, st Julien, Pauillac, st Estèphe, Médoc and Haut-médoc.
Called the ” Médoc Rouge “, you can visit it on foot, by bike or on horseback, by helicopter or hot-air balloon, from the Gironde River on a boat cruise or by car along the famous “route des châteaux”.
Circuit architecture des châteaux – au pays des mille et un châteaux – a 52 km circuit, available from the Pauillac Maison du Tourisme et du Vin, the wine houses, will provide you with all the information you need.

The Médoc through the ages

For lovers of history and fine stonework, come and discover the Romanesque buildings on the Brion site in St Germain d’Esteuil and visit the Soulac archaeological museum! The Cordouan lighthouse, the Blanquefort fortress, the Tour de l’Honneur in Lesparre, or the Fort-Médoc in Cussac (a unesco World Heritage site) which, along with the Citadelle de Blaye and Fort Paté, formed the Vauban lock that protected Bordeaux from an attack from the estuary!
Fall under the spell of Soulac sur Mer (500 neo-colonial villas), which became a seaside resort in 1849 with the fashion for sea bathing, and learn about the history of Notre-Dame de la fin des terres basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
